More than 1 400 children under the age of 18 were murdered between 2007 and 2008 in South Africa. Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa says most of the murders, about 370, took place in KwaZulu-Natal.
This was followed by the Eastern Cape with 350 child murders. The Northern Cape was the safest place for children, with only 38 murders.
Mthethwa says statistics for 2008 and 2009 are not yet available. He was replying to a written question in Parliament by the Democratic Alliance (DA)."
