BRIEF SELF-EVALUATION BY THE CANDIDATE.
DR C H WATSON

I am a natural academic. It comes easier to me than other occupational activities I have been involved in. I enjoy the intellectual processes.

My leadership skills are average to good and my management skills are good. My ability to work with and motivate teams is good. I work well with people.

I do not enjoy administration and routine activities, although they are an accepted part of academic life. I prefer research and managing others.

I am a conceptual thinker and can think strategically. I am good at conflict resolution and team building.

I am very articulate in English and Afrikaans.

My vision for the department of Construction Economics

Having studied in this department it has always meant a lot to me. My vision is to see the department become the flagship of departments in South Africa. It must again become the first choice of Building Industry when recruiting graduates.

The years immediately ahead will be extremely challenging to the Building Industry in South Africa. The World Cup, Gautrain and other developments are going to place great strain on our Labour and Material resources. It is perhaps even too late to recruit at this stage but the department is going to have to try and provide the highly trained manpower to meet this coming (and current) demand.

The department must work closely with outside stake holders, employers, donors and educational partners to provide the most current knowledge for training. My vision is to provide quality graduates that are regarded in high standing, within to the Industry in SA and Internationally.

The credibility and standing of any department is founded on its research capability. My vision would be to develop the research capability of the department to the extent that it can be regarded as a leader in South Africa and certainly be recognized internationally. The quality of a department is only as good as its lecturers within that department. It is consequently imperative to develop a research culture and credibility within the department, not only to keep knowledge levels “current” but also to contribute to the generation of new knowledge as an analogy for product development.

I would like to see the department housed in better, more inspiring accommodation, which reflects a corporate image worthy of the department. It seems the department is not well marketed.
